A lot of students and parents have asked me the same questions that how shall I or my child to finish reading a book during the last few years of teaching?
Here is my story, hopping it would give you some inspirations.
Not long ago, one of my foreign friend strongly suggested me to read Bible, because she thought it is a book of the greatest ever, a book full of wisdom that we ever needed. So she send me the link of Bible everyday and even send me Bible on my birthday as a present. She pick the chapter for me to read everyday or every the other day. But the truth is, I never finished read it, just as what has happened on you or your kids.
“WHY”, as you may ask, I ask myself everyday when I was asked to read the Bible. And then I found the following four rules of finishing reading a book.
1. Interest
There is a saying that interest is the best teacher ever. That's also true when it comes to reading, because most of the time, while we are reading, interest provide us with a great amount of willpower. Psychologically speaking, we all need willpower whatever we are trying to accomplished. Once we lack of it, we feel hard to insist on the things we are doing, even that is a really small one like switching the TV channel with TV remote control.
Back to my story, did I have any interest in Bible? Clearly “NO”, or I might not failedon it. And you? How about you? Do you have any interest in the book that you are reading? If is “NO”, then maybe you should change to another one. If is “YES”, then maybe you should dig it deeper, to have a stronger interest, to have a greater willpower, tofinishreading the book.
2.Needs
Do you have any needs from this book? Like in my story, reading the Bible might help me with my English. But not my only choice or the most comfortable choice for it is hard for me to understand it sometimes,which is not because of the words, the literal meaning, but the extending meaning and the culture. So I quite. What do you read the book that you are holding?
3.Understanding
The book that you are reading, it should be on your knowledge level or a bit highabove your knowledge level, so that it would be possible and comfortable for you to understand it.
In my story, I understand the literal meaning of the whole Bible, but not the extended meaning, which is understandable because it not just about a book but a whole new culture. Once I don't understand it, the whole Bible , for me, just a story book, and it is not even a good story book. Simply because I don't understand it.
How about you? Do you understand the book that you are reading? Or do you also find it’shard to understand it? Or do you know whether the book you suggested is understandable for your kids or not? Does he or she need any help or support when they are reading it? Have you ever provide those for them?
4. Afraid
Once my friend pick up eight chapters for me to finish reading it or directly give me the BOOK and tell me “finish it, you will know how great the book is”.honestly, when I got what my friend told me to do, my reaction was “OMG! So much! So many chapters! How could I ever gonna finish it”. And then I was afraid out and don't even want to open that BOOK for even just once.
So here is my suggestion, when you need to goal of reading, never set out a big one. On the other hand, I would suggest you to set a small one that you could finish it easily, that you could finish it even without much willpower. Just as how Stephen Guise turn himself from a quitter to a strong man with six pack, how he finished his famous book ”MINI HABITS”, which is the bestseller around the world.
With interest, with needs, on your knowledge level, without afraid, that are the four suggestions that I have for you, hopping it would help you to finish you reading.
