A teacher's gift
The day I got my bachelor's degree, I gave a sigh of relief! "
Finally it is time to say goodbye to my school days. No more tests for me! I thought.
But a week later I was in school again, and I met exams again. Exams not for me, but for my students. I was their teacher, and exams were like my gift for them, a gift to help them learn and practice what they learn in class. The students had no choice but to take this "gift", whether they like it or not.
Ladies and gentlemen, good evening. Have you received such a gift from your teacher before? In your precious school days, besides having classes and taking exams, what other gifts did you take from your teachers?
As for me, I can still recall some of the valuable lessons I learnt from my teachers. Not the kind of lessons that teach one ABC, but lessons that exert a life-long influence on my life. They are like gifts, cherished and carefully preserved by me until today.
I remember the day when I failed in an important maths test. I was horrified to let others know about my terrible score, because it would be so humiliating! Before the test papers were given out in class, I was called to Mr Chen’s office beforehand. "This is your test paper, Kathy. Take it. I guess this time you want to keep the score a secret right? Keep it well. And I'm sure you will try harder in maths next time!"
I was out of his office, with a roll of test paper in my hand, and with a thankful heart for Mr Chen, for his thoughtfulness in dealing with students’ scores, for his extra patience for those students with low marks, and thankful for his making student feel dignified and respected.
Now as a teacher myself, I often recall Mr Chen’s gift for me. That is: show respect to every student because each of them is unique and important. At the end of last semester, I suddenly had an idea that I would like to write a postcard to each one of them. I gave them my appreciation and wished them a happy summer vacation.

Summer vacation is a time for travelling, and whenever I travel, wherever I travel, I will do something small and something big. On my journey I will find time to write a postcard to Mr Zheng, my high school English teacher. Small as the card is, it embodies big meaning for me. A postcard sends my best regards to my beloved teacher and serves as a way to say: I miss you.
(pic of postcard and Jason sending a postcard)
Mr Zheng loved and cared for his students when they were in school, and he loves and cares for his students more after they graduate from school. He shows to me that a teacher’s love for his students is endless, permanent and infinite; a love that is so deep and ever-lasting to go far beyond schooldays, a love that can beat time and space.
(Show pic of Mr Zheng.)
This picture shows Mr Zheng showed up at our 30th birthday party. He brought us a big cake, and gave my son a red packet. He is just like a father to us, and a grandfather to our children.
"It's your 30 th birthday, my children. And it's a big day for you! How can I not be there to celebrate " His words moved everybody present.
As a teacher myself, I also care for those students who graduate, and listen to their love stories in college, their growing pains and happiness, and share my own stories with them. I bring them here to witness the speech contest, and bring them to the studio to paint oil-painting together, and it is fun!
Then here is the question. Why do I join toastmaster, give speeches here and even participate in the speech contest? I am a busy teacher at school and a busy mom at home. What is the motive for me to do all this?
Because it is fun, and more importantly, it is a way to challenge myself, and a way to practise what I teach.
Two years ago I heard of a story told by my former student. My student is studying in Financial University (财大), and she joined the debate team there. The teacher in charge of debate team not only coaches the students in debating, but also participates in all kinds of national debate contests together with his students, not as a coach, but as a contestant. You hear it right. He actually competes against his students in the game!
Wouldn’t it be so embarrassing if he lost the game? I thought.
The students also felt awkward to compete against their teacher at first. But he said:
“If I beat my students in the debate contest, I am pleased. I am successful as a debater.
But if I am beaten by my students, I will feel much prouder. It shows I am successful as a teacher. ”
His words deeply impressed me. I learn from him that as a teacher, I should never lie on the bed of roses or be content with what I already learn. As a teacher, I need to push myself to the stage, I need to keep taking challenges, I need to keep learning and set an example for my students that there is no end to learning.
That’s the gift I learn from a teacher whose name I don’t know, but who I respect.
Ladies and gentlemen, tonight I share with you the three valuable gifts I get from my own teachers. These gifts from my teachers have greatly shaped me and made me who I am today. Above all, these gifts make me WEALTHY, even wealthier than those people with 20 million people in their bank account, and I hope to pass down these gifts to my students and make them as wealthy as I am.
Ladies and gentlemen, what is the special gift you get from your teachers? Keep that precious gift in your heart, follow your teachers’ steps, because “to be like your teacher” is the best gift for your teachers
on this special Teachers’ Day! Thank you!
Notes
