5 There is now a kind of sleep deprivation one-upmanship
one-upmanship这个词我也是第一次见到, 但如果你抓到了前边的sleep deprivation和上下句的话, 其实意思是很好懂的.
我们先看后缀吧, -ship还挺常见的, 比如
friendship=友情
kinship=亲情
fellowship=情谊
-ship的含义大抵是
quality, condition; act, power, skill; office, position; relation between
-manship这个后缀要少见一些, 但也是见过滴, 比如
craftsmanship=精湛的手艺
statesmanship=政治才能
marksmanship=射击才能
-manship的含义大抵是
skill in a particular activity, especially of a competitive nature
最后我们看one-up
They're always trying to one-up each other by buying the latest gadgets.
I just don't see why we have to one-up each other.
这个还挺符合字面意思的, literal meaning的, 就是感觉比对方再多得一分的意思
所以连起来one-upmanship就是试图比对方更胜一筹的做法
engaged in a round of verbal one-upmanship
