There are two interesting types of people in Mary’s life: the bookish (书呆子的) and the boorish (粗鲁的).
The bookish tend to label (贴标签) and describe all kinds of things in their lives. It’s no surprise when you hear the following statement (声明):
“A baby is a developing human being; a dog is a four-legged and loyal animal; a laptop is a portable (便携的) and emotionless brain.”
Sometimes their statements can be a little unpleasant, but that’s just the way they are.
Then there are the boorish. Unlike the bookish, they tend to use their fists to deal with things. They hit you on the head when you annoy them and they pat (轻拍) you on the shoulder when they like you.
Do Mary’s bookish friends and boorish friends get along No, they don’t.
Mary
除了文中提到的以外,一些更常用的还有:the wounded (受伤的人), the old (老人), the unknown(未知的事物)。
在他们的话语里,常出现“a baby is…”, “a dog is…”
A car is more expensive than a bike,
比如说,文中讲到,Mary的粗鲁朋友经常hit you on the head (打你的头),
或 pat you on the shoulder (轻轻拍打你的肩膀)。
the cunning (“老奸巨猾型”), the domineering (“爱当领导型”), the sheepish (小绵羊型), the dovish (和平鸽型), the dreamer type (爱做梦型), the dreamy/charming (迷人型)…
