How teaching English becomes my career?
I was not really interested in English until the last semester in university when I passed the College English Test Band 6 with 86 points higher than the pass mark, which I had failed 3 times before. With the confidence gained from it, I joined Morning Reading Club to practice my spoken English everyday morning. During the 6 months’ time, I was one of the only two members who took part almost every day. It was at that time that the seed of English started to grow. After leaving my university, although I had to do the job as a tutor, I still took full use of my morning time to read English loud and participated in even more English corners. One year later, with good spoken English and a heart to help people with English, I became an English teacher in a listed company and since I really enjoy it, teaching English has become my committed career. That is my turning point of my life and combining my half-decent academic performance with my English practicing experience, I learned a valuable lesson that real passion comes not before you can do something well but after it.
Why I choose this programme and the University of Sheffield?
This programme can better help me grasp efficient ways to learn and teach English. As I am always changing my methods of learning English to better fit my progressive English abilities, both Second Language Acquisition and Language Teaching Methodology are essential to my understanding of the different stages of English learning. As a result, the combination of linguistics and Tesol courses is a perfect fit for me. Work placements and extra professional qualifications are also fairly appealing.
Besides the high ranking and fame of the University of Sheffield, I also value the leading professors there, like Beatriz Gonzalez-Fernandez (I want to learn more efficient methods of teaching vocabulary from her since lexis lays the foundation of a language)
I happened to know and become friends with some exchange students from the University of Sheffield in Nanjing University where I live close. Learning quite a lot interesting things about the life in this university, such as the lift without a door, pre, ......, makes me really eager to study there. Thinking that we can still be able to often hang out next year in the same university, I just feel so excited. At the same time, My school friend majoring in Process Safety and Loss Prevention now has also assured me it is a great university to study in.
The University of Sheffield is definitely my top priority.

Why I am a good fit and what sets me apart?
My work experience has prepared me well for this course. I have been teaching English for 3 years and participated in a great deal of training sessions from my company or online resources. Among them, I find what most appeals to me is Language acquisition and teaching skills related ones. After each lesson, I will try to apply what I have learned. For example, I have applied Information-gap Task and Informal Assessment from the TKT course.
I have made huge progress so far. I have been passionate about English for more than 3 years. I got 7 in IELTS already last year. I have studied for one year outside work for IEITS and I have taught IELTS courses part-time for half a year in order to lift my understanding of English.
Outside work, I have improved to a remarkable degree. Besides a large number of Chinese books, I have read many original English books to improve both my reading and mind, including Peak, Beyond Feelings, Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals, etc. On top of that, three years in Toastmasters International has substantially advanced my communication skills through totally over 80 English speeches from scratch.
Good habits have opened the door for me to a fulfilling and healthy life. My everyday habits are getting up before 7 o’clock and reading English loud (for more than 3 years), making my daily to-do list, learning English vocabulary from an app named Baicizhan (690 days’ attendance to date). I also take exercise at least twice a week, which enabled me to lose weight about 16 kilograms within 4 months. Last, I have been recording every minute I have spent with the APP Atimelogger for more than 2 years and I write an article to analyse how my time is used and adjust my plan for the next month accordingly on a monthly basis.
Furthermore, I can offer unique insights to this programme because of my science and engineering background. As a boy who do not major in English, I can better understand those learners who do not specialise in English but are in the majority. More people especially males will be inspired by my English-learning experiences.
In addition, I regard myself as an accommodating explorer. Through my life, I have been learning new skills on my own and shared my experience to new comers, such as playing the piano (due to it, I created a volunteer society to teach fresh starters skills like dancing and Ping-pong in university), practicing spoken English, losing weight, playing badminton. I know, on the way of English, I will still explore more things and benefit more people.
What is my vision?
My vision is to work out the most efficient ways to learn English, mainly spoken English and reading ability, to save learners’ invaluable time. China’s English education is generally inefficient. For average senior, 14 years’ study still does not guarantee a good enough English level to communicate. This is disheartening given those precious years.
Next, I will collaborate with people who share the same vision to develop my own business to enable this method to spread and benefit more English learners in China.
