Lesson31 Success story
Yesterday afternoon Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experiences as a young man. Before he retired, Frank was the head of a very large business company, but as a boy he used to work in a small shop. It was his job to repair bicycles and at that time he used to work fourteen hours a day. He saved money for years and in 1958 he bought a small work-shop of his own. In his twenties, Frank used to make spare parts for aeroplanes. At that time he had two helpers. In a few years, the small work-shop had become a large factory which employed seven hundred and twenty-eight people. Frank smiled when he remembered his hard early years and the long road to success. He was still smiling when the door opened and his wife came in. She wanted him to repair their grandson's bicycle!

1.发音
音标中/u:/与/ʊ/发音区别
听了赖世雄的讲解，仍是云里雾里，百度了一篇文章，讲解的很清楚。
/u:/是长音，两唇形成圆筒状，舌头尽量向后缩，双唇前伸。发 /u:/音的字母和字母组合如下所示：
1.oo,ou,oe,ue：too﹑group﹑shoe﹑blue;
2.u,ew(发/u:/音时常常前边加/j/)：music﹑new;
3.wo：two;
4.ui：fruit﹑juice;
/ʊ/是短音，发此音时舌位比/u:/音略微靠前，双唇稍收圆，双唇稍前伸。发 /ʊ/音的字母和字母组合如下所示：
1.oo,ou：book﹑foot﹑would;
2.u：full﹑sugar;
3.o：woman;
通过以上可以看到有一些字母和字母组合，都可以发/u:/与/ʊ/音，那么遇到含有这些字母或者是字母组合的单词，怎么判断发/u:/与/ʊ/音呢？
1.字母组合oo
发/u:/：too﹑food﹑room﹑school﹑spoon﹑soon;
发/ʊ/：book﹑foot﹑look﹑cookery﹑good;
2.字母组合ou
发 /u:/：soup﹑through﹑group;
发 /ʊ/：could﹑would;
3.字母u
发 /u:/：music；
发 /ʊ/：full﹑sugar;
不知你总结出了什么规律没有， 字母组合oo发 /ʊ/音，偏向于单词发音以/k/﹑/t/结尾的清辅音，而字母组合oo发 /u:/音，偏向于单词发以/d/﹑/m/﹑/l/﹑/n/结尾的浊辅音，不过特殊的是good。关于清辅音和浊辅音是什么，以后再讲。字母组合ou发 /ʊ/集中在could ﹑would上，其它是最有可能发 /u:/，遇到特殊的再说。字母 u 发 /u:/集中在前边有 /j/的单词中，所以如果可以判断出单词有 /j/ 音，那么这时候的 字母 u 最可能发 /u:/。

遇到不懂的音标还是要多去搜索下，网上资源真的很丰富。
白天利用上班闲暇时间跟读，晚上再对着音标跟读发现了一些没注意到的地方，比如，人名Hawkins 中的k浊化成g，bicycle中的k也是浊化了。
