第1题：Some people think that robots are very important for humans' future development. Others, however, think that robots are a dangerous invention that could have negative effects on society. Discuss both views and give your opinion. （2011年1月8日雅思写作大作文题目）

Opinions are divided over whether robots influence humans in a positive or negative way. From my perspective, although today they seem to have some negative effects on us, however, in the long run, they are critical to our development.  

Nowadays, many people believe robots are the culprits of high unemployment rates in that they have replaced many jobs. For example, more and more department stores or supermarkets in some big cities have embraced automated checkout systems. If this trend continues, more world’s retail jobs like cashier could be at risk. On the other hand, AI robots are becoming increasingly intelligent, so intelligent that some critics of robots are concerned about whether, one day, they will develop consciousness and even outperform humans in brain power. If that happens, will robots become the new oppressors, who will enslave and exploit humans in the same way as we do other animals today?  

Proponents of robot technologies are optimistic that robots will make great contributions to humans’ future life. Our current existence is increasingly threatened by such factors  as predictable energy crisis, dramatic climate change and potential asteroid strikes. The list could go on and on. Once any one of these dangers happen, it will become the worst nightmare for our home planet. To brace up for the worst, ambitious human beings have set their sights on outer space for new settlements. However, the search for new homes is not easy and we can’t do this on our own. That’s where robots come in. Landers, rovers and other robotic machines can replace us to perform tasks such as taking photos, collecting samples and even establishing permanent bases on other planets under critical conditions. They are the brave pioneers who set the building blocks for our future space colonization.

I am fully optimistic about the future of robots, because their contributions to the society are manifest in every part of our life. Although they pose some problems, however, I firmly believe we, human beings will make concerted efforts to overcome them as we overcame other problems in the history.
