鲜叶选择

正山小种红茶与金骏眉红茶虽然都是采自同一种茶树上面，在鲜叶的选择上面，正山小种采用茶树嫩芽的一芽一叶或者一芽两叶作为茶叶鲜叶的，而金骏眉必须选自茶树刚开芽的嫩叶，摘取芽头最鲜嫩的部位，5斤左右的茶芽(即50000粒左右茶芽)才能制成1斤左右的成品。

制作工艺

正山小种与金骏眉的制作工艺大体相同，经过研发人员的微创新，才有了现在的金骏眉，主要是在发酵以及熏制的过程中有所不同。金骏眉的制作工艺更加精进，正山小种则是采用传统的经典制作工艺。金骏眉基本上沿袭了正山小种传统的制造工艺。在萎调时，鲜叶原料由鲜绿色变为暗绿色，就视为萎调适度。而发酵过程要恰到好处，若发酵不足，则容易产生苦涩感，发酵时间过长，则与普通正山小种红茶无异，不会产生金骏眉所特有的品质。金骏眉只在萎调时有小部分的烟熏过程，而传统的正山小种则要在萎调和烘焙的过程中经过松柴烟熏。
