We hear a lot about the ways technology is changing the world of work, but if we're not being taken over by robots just yet, what is it that companies want from humans in 2025?
According to the annual Future of Jobs Report, released by the World Economic Forum (WEF), "analytical thinking" is the top answer.
The report found that seven out of 10 companies described analytical thinking as an essential skill. Tech company Matter describes this as "the ability to tackle complicated issues by evaluating information you've gathered and organized."
Companies also value resilience and flexibility, according to the report.
And it's easy to see why the workers of the 21st century might need to be resilient and flexible —because the WEF also reported that, on average, today's workers can expect almost 40% of their existing skill sets to become outdated by 2030.
That might sound scary, but this statistic is actually trending in the right direction: in 2020 that figure was estimated to be almost 60%.
The WEF said this may be because companies and workers have been successfully reskilling since the coronavirus pandemic to help close those "skills gaps."
However, the report warns that the scale of the upskilling that is still needed is "significant," and these skill gaps are highlighted as a major barrier for businesses over the next five years.
Eighty-five percent of companies said they'll be making upskilling a priority, while 70% said they'll need to hire new staff to help their company grow.
However, 40% said they may need to cut staff numbers as some employees' skills become less relevant. And in some cases, companies said they expect to reduce the number of people they employ because artificial intelligence software will be able to automate certain tasks.
But overall, the WEF predicts that the global jobs market will grow between now and 2030, "resulting in net growth of 7% of total employment, or 78 million jobs."
