滴滴出行向金融服务领域扩展业务文章

Didi Chuxing, the Chinese ride-hailing app, has branched out into financial services as new regulations threaten to cut the number of available drivers.

Didi’s financial services, including motor insurance, personal loans and a crowdfunded medical insurance product, were added to its ride-hailing app yesterday as well as a separate “Didi Finance” app.

Didi’s move to diversify comes after a difficult six months in which two passengers were murdered, forcing the company to suspend its “Hitchcarpooling platform.

The government severely criticised the company and threatened punishments if Didi did not improve customer safety. New regulations, which came into force on Tuesday, also threaten to cut the size of the company’s fleet.

Moving into financial services puts Didi in direct competition with established fintech companies such as Ant Financial, Alibaba’s sister company, and Tencent’s WeSure and WeBank. Didi had tested some financial services for a small group of drivers and users.

进军金融服务业会让滴滴与阿里巴巴(Alibaba)的关联公司蚂蚁金服(Ant Financial)、以及腾讯(Tencent)旗下的微保(WeSure)和微众银行(WeBank)等成熟的金融科技公司展开直接竞争。滴滴已经面向少数司机及用户测试了一些金融服务。

“The question is [whether] this is Didi’s attempt to carve out a new sector for itself following its losses in ride-hailing and its investment in ofo [the cycle app],” said Chen Lin, assistant professor of marketing at China-Europe International Business School in Shanghai.

“问题在于这是否是滴滴继叫车服务及其投资的(共享单车应用)ofo亏损后为自身开辟新业务的一种尝试。”上海中欧国际工商学院(China-Europe International Business School)市场营销学助理教授林宸表示。

Didi said its financial services were for an “era of new economy and flexible employment” and that some, such as medical insurance, would “lower the entry barrier for gig economy workers”.

滴滴表示,其金融服务面向的是一个“新经济与灵活就业的时代”,并称其医疗保险等服务将“降低零工经济从业人员的准入门槛”。

Drivers will find it more difficult to sign up for Didi this year as they will have to pass an exam and apply for a ride-hailing licence. Didi declined to comment on the impact of the new regulations. The company had said it would “work towards comprehensive driver and vehicle certification” through “driver education campaigns and special funds” to encourage drivers to take the relevant tests.

“The impact on Didi will depend on the strength of implementation. It won’t happen all at once,” said Bao Jun, analyst at market research firm iResearch.
