原文：知其雄，守其雌，为天下谿。为天下谿，常德不离，复归于婴儿。知其白，守其黑，为天下式。为天下式，常德不忒，复归于无极。知其荣，守其辱，为天下谷。为天下谷，常德乃足，复归于朴。朴散则为器，圣人用之则为官长，故大制不割。

翻译：Learn to be hard as man

and remain soft as woman

like a stream in the world.

This stream in the world

will not depart from the way of virtue

but rejuvenate to its infancy.

Learn to be bright and remain in the dark,

and try to be a model for the world.

A model for the world

will not stray from the way of virtue

but stretch to infinity.

Learn to be glorious and remain humble

like a vale in the world.

A vale in the world

will be fulfilled with constant virtue

and return to simplicity.

Simplicity may be diversified into instruments.

When a sage uses the instruments,

he becomes the ruler.

There should be unity in the rule of the great sage.
