Grandpa

Same as everyone else, my grandpa was like a speck of dust of his times, although the forefather of him was ever a former second degree candidate in the provincial examination (举人) in Qing dynasty.

Despite of tile-roofed houses, grandpa didn't get a chance to study, thus made a living on the land, and sometimes selling steamed bread made by selves. What impressed my mum a lot was that grandpa used to tell them stories of old times, which he heard from others and then kept in his own mind.

During civil war in 1940s, grandpa joined the army of Kuomintang, without realizing that it would lead to a big tragedy for himself. As being predestined, during the war, grandpa happened to meet grandma, whose former husband passed away due to acute appendicitis.

During the period of Cultural Revolution in 1960s, grandpa became one of focuses to be criticized in public by commune members, as he ever joined the army of Kuomintang. The unending criticism & denouncement, put too much stress on grandpa, and he chose to suicide himself at midnight of February 29th of 1970 (Lunar calendar).

Not knowing exactly how grandpa was driven to despair, I feel very sorry about everything that happened to him. If I could return to that time, I would like a chance to talk with him and hug him. 

Grandpa, I will always miss you, and wish you everything fine in the heaven!
