拉橇狗甩开步子走上雪道时一点没吃上劲,不安地回头一看,便停下来显出惊讶。驾橇人也吃了一惊:雪橇没动地方。他把同伴们都喊过来看这一情景:索尔雷克斯的两根缰绳全给戴夫咬断了,而且戴夫正好呆在雪橇前他原先的位置上。
因伤被别的狗顶替了拉雪橇位置的戴夫,做了一件让所有人吃惊的事,戴夫将绳子咬断,其他狗向前跑,留下绳子和雪橇在原地,戴夫站在他原来健康的时候站的位置,仿佛自己还能像原来一样奋勇向前。他像壮士一样宁死不屈,拉橇是他唯一的信念。
