He called his comrades to witness the sight. Dave had bitten through both of Sol-leks's traces, and was standing directly in front of the sled in his proper place.

拉橇狗甩开步子走上雪道时一点没吃上劲，不安地回头一看，便停下来显出惊讶。驾橇人也吃了一惊：雪橇没动地方。他把同伴们都喊过来看这一情景：索尔雷克斯的两根缰绳全给戴夫咬断了，而且戴夫正好呆在雪橇前他原先的位置上。

因伤被别的狗顶替了拉雪橇位置的戴夫，做了一件让所有人吃惊的事，戴夫将绳子咬断，其他狗向前跑，留下绳子和雪橇在原地，戴夫站在他原来健康的时候站的位置，仿佛自己还能像原来一样奋勇向前。他像壮士一样宁死不屈，拉橇是他唯一的信念。

他先伸出前腿，然后猛地一收，把身体往前拖上几寸。接着他再伸出前腿，身体往前一收，再向前拖上几寸。

戴夫最后站都站不起来了，只好匍匐前进。我们能想象“匍匐”这个动作，这句话描写的正是这个动作。

这样的神来之笔，写只濒死但不屈的狗，佩服！
