Modern education is standing at a new crossroad faced with multiple challenges.
“The sooner the better”, goes an old adage. Parents across China have taken it literally to herd their children to learn English in the hope that a refined knowledge and its skilled use would guarantee them a bright future. Chinese people’s obsession with education has compelled them to get their children to study extracurricular classes as early as possible despite the lack of evidence proving this to be an effective method.
Since Chinese people believe there has been a shift in the criteria for admission to high schools and colleges across the world—from just test scores to all-round ability, they are even sending toddlers to learn English in the hope that they would be different from their peers. It turns out to be compulsory and coercive. To most Chinese students, it has come to be a suffering.
A child’s learning capability vastly depends on the environment it is fostered in. Students are not stupid—if you create a good environment for them, they will easily excel at studying and develop themselves much better. But for now, extracurricular classes are reaping the harvest of Chinese parents’ ignorance and desperation, which, in turn, is crippling Chinese education.
Schools have long been considered as the place that education needs to including and emphasise moral education. The aim of higher education is more than economic advancement. Anybody who is only conscious of his or her personal interest is a threat to society. The meaning of college is not only to let its students be skillful or specialized in some areas but to expose them to the great minds and ideas all around the world, to raise their awareness of some important virtues such as honesty, integrity and altruism, which are crucial to social cohesion. All round education can undoubtedly help students have a global thinking as well as draw inspiration from the world, which can help them go further.
If there is a crisis in Chinese education, it is the education system that focus on exams and role learning that should be blamed.Spoon-feeding education causes students' loss of interest in learning. But all-round education is the opposite, which focuses on the whole — social, emotional, mental, physical, and cognitive — development of each student.

Degrees can help, but only with skills and capacities can we be a cut above the rest.
