As the brainchild of a journalist and newspaper publisher, Pulitzer Prize features fourteen awards directly relating to journalism,

ranging from investigative reporting and explanatory reporting to feature writing and editorial writing.

The distinctions drawn among those categories reflect a nuanced understanding of the differences among various journalistic tools and specialties.

All of the awards are high journalistic distinctions and winning any one of them can be a reporter or a writer's dream come true.

In its more than 12 decades of history, its honorees exposed terrorist groups such as the operations of Ku Klux Klan,

uncovered illegal practices such as the infamous Ponzi scheme, and published more exposés that you would otherwise never have known.

When perusing through the definitions for all of the categories, the yardsticks for good journalism are evident:

it speaks truth, provides contexts, values originality, sticks to rigorous accuracy both in craft and content, and yields wide and lasting influence.

That's why tabloid news or sensational stories about celebrities' daily lives won't have any real shot at being nominated for any award.

Although Pulitzer Prize is mostly referred to as a prize for journalism, it would be wrong to assume that the awards are restricted to merely rewarding distinguished journalism.

The awards extend to fiction, non-fiction, drama, and even music.

Words. Photos. Rhythms. Drawings. Theatrics. They can all make expressive and powerful mediums when it comes to documenting culture as it evolves with technology,

illuminating the human condition in a world that is both beautiful and more dangerous than ever, and giving voice to the voiceless.

They also open the way to new shapes that journalism can take to adapt to the 21st century.

Going back to the decline of newspapers, while I lament this trend for I myself am an ultimate newspaper reader, I don't see it as a precursor to a crisis in journalism per se.

If anything, going forward, it is only going to be more useful and indispensable,

since journalism, as well as other expressive mediums, reminds us of who we are, where we are, how we should treat each other, and why.
