Mentor

初期两俱乐部会员均不足13人,先与主席沟通目标与想法,再制定具体行动方案(如会议流程优化、注重MOT、嘉宾邀请策略、会员及来宾奖励机制等);

定期(每月或每两月)回顾进展,多次出差参与常州俱乐部会议(最多一月4次),按需承担主持人、总评(英文总评对我而言是不小挑战,但仍积极尝试)、时间官等角色;

7月至今工作量激增3倍,身心俱疲,由此联想到“手机因垃圾过多需恢复出厂设置”,类比自身也需要“重置”;

以舒马赫的故事为例:F1赛车比赛中临近终点意外失利后,他暂离赛场开出租车,在慢节奏中重拾对赛车的热爱与坚持,映射自己虽工作繁忙,但仍愿专注做好每件事,追求极致;

Though only 7 people attended today’s meeting, it was content-rich, energetic, and of high quality overall. Here’s a structured summary of its processes and highlights:

1. Opening and Self-Introductions

After a brief opening, three guests introduced themselves one by one, covering "who they are, where they’re from, their hobbies, and their jobs"—namely Fusheng, Xiaoyu, and Charlie.

2. Impromptu Debate and Table Topic Session

Three topics were set, with flexible language switches (the first in English, the second in Chinese, the third in English), sparking multi-perspective discussions:

1. Topic 1: Humor (debated in English)

2. Topic 2: Whether money should be pooled together (debated in Chinese)

3. Topic 3: Whether to calm down first or clarify the道理 [truth/reason] first when arguing (debated in English)

Participants presented diverse viewpoints through debates. This innovative format, a first for such a meeting, added much value. A summary and review were conducted immediately after the session.

3. Guest Sharing

Xiaoyu gave a talk on insurance and healthcare, incorporating interpretations of national policies. Since I wanted to learn about insurance, I specifically invited him to explain "how to reasonably purchase critical illness medical insurance or million-dollar health insurance," and the content was practical and clear.

4. Prepared Speeches

1. My Speech: Why I Serve as a Club Mentor

I shared my experience as a mentor for clubs in Changzhou and Taicang:

Initially, both clubs had fewer than 13 members. I first communicated with their presidents about goals and ideas, then formulated specific action plans (e.g., optimizing meeting processes, focusing on MOT, strategies for inviting guests, reward mechanisms for members and guests, etc.);

I reviewed progress regularly (monthly or bi-monthly) and traveled frequently to attend Changzhou club meetings (up to 4 times a month), taking on roles like host, general evaluator (English evaluation was quite a challenge for me, but I actively tried), and timekeeper as needed;

Eventually, I helped both clubs achieve "S-level Distinguished Club" by the end of the year, with membership exceeding 20. The club presidents even recorded thank-you videos.

Insight: Being a mentor is like managing a project—you need to set goals first and then follow through. It hones planning skills, and while helping others, you also grow yourself.

2. Sun Peng’s Speech: Factory Reset

Originally planned to be in English, it was delivered in Chinese, sharing his personal experience:

Since July, his workload has tripled, leaving him physically and mentally exhausted. This made him think of how "phones need a factory reset when cluttered with junk," drawing an analogy to his own need for a "reset";

He used Michael Schumacher’s story as an example: After a near-victory at the finish line in an F1 race ended in defeat, Schumacher temporarily left racing to drive a taxi. In the slower pace, he rediscovered his love and persistence for racing—mirroring his own situation: despite busy work, he is determined to focus on doing things well and striving for excellence;

Core message: After a "factory reset," he will face challenges with full energy, confident in his ability to accomplish what he sets out to do.

(Note: Since Sun Peng needed to reply to his boss’s messages, I delivered the president’s opening introduction in English on his behalf.)

5. Other Highlights

• A new guest drove an hour from Pinghu (with his son) to attend and shared his work related to "Ubest children’s bikes."

• Awards session: Fusheng, Xiaoyu, and Riana were recognized, all performing excellently.

Despite the small number of participants, the meeting saw high engagement, smooth transitions between sessions, and notable results.

What moved me most today was Charlie's feedback. He said that unlike Shanghai and Hangzhou, Jiaxing is not as bustling and doesn't have such a large population. However, there are so many people here who keep organizing Toastmasters meetings, building a platform for English lovers to learn, which he thinks makes everyone truly remarkable. He expressed his gratitude to the club members for creating such a great platform, and also cherished the opportunity to meet everyone here, valuing this friendship deeply. He also hoped to attend more meetings in the future.
