There's a Secret Apartment in the Eiffel Tower
If we were to say where the best view in Europe is, the top of the Eiffel Tower would be a likely contender （竞争者）. Imagine waking up in a cozy apartment （舒适的公寓 ）with colorful wallpaper, wooden cabinets 木制的橱柜, and a grand piano 三角钢琴. You'd sip espresso 啜饮浓咖啡 and nibble a croissant （羊角面包 ） while gazing over the Palais de Chaillot （Chaillot宫） from nearly 1,000 feet (305 meters) in the air. You may believe that this is what Gustave Eiffel had in mind when he instructed his team to build the tower and its secret apartment in 1889, but the truth is that he needed to use this space to make his tower a permanent fixture of the Paris skyline （天际线）.
Originally, the Eiffel Tower was intended as a temporary exhibit meant to broadcast France's industrial power to the rest of Europe. Eiffel knew that the terms of the construction project meant the tower was slated for demolition in 1909 （计划1909年拆除）, so he contacted the world's most prominent（杰出的） scientists in an attempt to provide the tower with a legitimate scientific purpose （合法的科学目的 ） that would save his namesake creation（同名创作 ） from being destroyed.
