Housing Growth and Land Loss

The two graphs illustrate China's housing growth rate and its arable land loss rate. As can be seen, the changing trends have been roughly corresponding to each other. To be exact,China's housing growth rate were quite slow before the year of 2000. But after that,it skyrocketed. Similarly, the arable land loss rate increased by less than 10% between 1991 and 2000. After that,it rose by over 20% within 5 years.

These two trends could be explained by the urbanization endeavors undertaken by local governments across China. It is learned that after the year of 2000,a massive scale of infrastructure construction was rolled out to speed up the urbanization and modernization drive, resulting in cities becoming larger and larger, and a growing number of people moving away from countryside to cities. As a result, arable lands around cities had to be claimed to build new houses to accommodate the blooming urban population.

In my opinion, the construction of urbanization should be made according to reasonable plans. Local governments should make use of all kinds of land appropriately,so as to drive a balance on the use of land for housing and cultivation.
