Firemen had been fighting the forest fire for nearly three weeks before they could get it under control. A short time before,great trees had covered the countryside for miles around. Now, smoke still rose up from the warm ground over the desolate hills. Winter was coming on and the hills threatened the surrounding villages with destruction, for heavy rain would not only wash away the soil but would cause serious floods as well. When the fire had at last been put out, the forest authorities ordered several tons of a special type of grass-seed which would grow quickly. The seed was sprayed over the ground in huge quantities by aero planes. The planes had been planting seed for nearly a month when it began to rain. By then, however, in many places the grass had already taken root. In place of the great trees which had been growing there for centuries, patches of green had begun to appear in the blackened soil.

1.音标学习

/ ɔː /，单元音后元音,是个长元音,美式英语与之对应的音标符号[ɔ]。

①发音方法：

1）张开嘴双唇收圆，并向前突出。

2）舌身低平后缩，舌后部抬起。

3）震动声带，发出/ɔː/音。

②本文中含有这个音标的单词练习：for，before，short，warm，cause，authorities，order。

2.知识点

（1）desolate 荒凉的，无人烟的

（2）under control,受到控制。

get it under control表示“使它得到控制”，get有“使……处于某种状态”的含义

（3）for miles around,方圆数英里。

around表示“在周围”、“向四周”：

This is the only modern building for miles around.方圆数英里之内这是惟一的一座现代化建筑。

（6）take root表示“生根”，是固定短语。这个短语也可以表示某种思想/想法等“扎根”：　The idea has taken root in his mind.

patches of green had begun to appear in the blackened soil.一片片的绿草开始出现在这片烧焦的土地上，代替了多少世纪以来一直生长在那里的参天大树。

练习感悟：

    长句较多，容易读不下来。不熟悉的单词应该提前多念几遍，不然很容易在那个单词那里读错然后又得重新再来。
