先来看前缀hippo,
hippo 本义为horse，为常用词根
是不是在哪里见过呢？对啦，医学之父希波克拉底「hippocrates」。据考证，他的名字本义为a superior in horses，(hippo:马; kratia: cracy，rule)
大概就是千里马的意思啦哈哈哈，毕竟是医学之父嘛。
言归正传，
1. hippo- 指马，
2. campus=kampos，kampe，指古代神话里的一种海兽，因为形状像一条毛虫，因此campus也引申为bend,curve弯曲，曲线。

那么我们所熟知的campus(校园)，当然也和这头野兽有关系啦。这大概是因为最早的大学校园源于西方的农业地区，而当时农耕畜牧业圈地的边界大多是曲线，所以逐渐地campus就用来指一种地区规划了，后来逐渐演变就有人用campus来专指校园了。
1570年，有人创造了hippocampus一词来专指这个头像马头的生物，海马了
充满想象的神经科学家们在发现大脑中涉及记忆等高级活动的海马这一结构后，就创造性地用hippocampus来形容啦。因为脑中的这一结构和海中的这种生物很像嘛！
