【遣词造句用英语】语法连载

[be] able

able 主要用于 be able + 动词不定式 这一结构，其含义往往和 can 一样。

able 的否定形式是 unable。

Some people are able to / can walk on their hands.
有些人能用手走路。

I am unable to/ can't understand what she wants ,
我弄不明白她要什么。

要表示“知道怎样做”的意思，多用 can。在 can see， can hear等表达方式中，也要用 can。

Can you knit?
你会织毛活吗?
( 比 Are you able to knit? 更为自然。)

I can see a ship。
我可以看见一条船。
( 比 l am able to see a ship. 更为自然。)

在有些情况下 ( 例如：将来时、现在完成时 )，语法上不允许用 can/ could，因为它们没有不定式或分词形式，这时要用 be able。

One day scientists will be able to find a cure for cancer.
总有一天科学家能找到根治癌症的方法。
( 不能说： ... will can find ... )

What have you been able to find out?
你能发现什么?
( 不能说： What have you could ... ? )

I might be able to help you.
我也许能帮助你。
( 不能说：I might can ... )

able 后面一般不接动词不定式的被动式。

He can't be understood.
他让人无法理解。
( 比 He's not able to be understood. 自然。)
