Put on noise-cancelling headphones. We need to be very careful to treat the sound to our brain. The working memory is limited, and so we can't help but represent some of the words in the part of the brain used for storing verbal information. It will limit the space on verbal tasks.
Switch off all notifications. The first step is to turn off everything except emergency channels. The second step is to define short, focused check-in times.
Put up a Do Not Disturb Sign. It is to raise the barriers for potential interruptions for increasing the duration of focus.
Plan the work session. Plan the day and the steps. Make sure what to focus before you start it.
Create a focused environment. Picking a space without interrupt that can be a big boost to our focus.
Note the starting time. Tracing the deep work hours. The idea is to maintain a tally or time log of when we do focused work throughout the day. The way by jotting down the starting time of a deep work session. This makes tracing the deep work hours easier (since our memories of how much-undistracted work we engaged in can be fallible), but it also sets the intention to work deeply. We can start the intention to focus on half of the battle.
Go easy on ourselves. Sometime the distraction might just want to feel the upcoming work will be unpleasant then we try to get out of it. The rational response to it is simply to lower our standards temporarily. "I'm just going to show up" is something we can even write down on a post-it before our start, reminding we that what matters is giving ourselves space to focus, rather than reaching arbitrary performance standards.
Small steps make a huge difference.
