People always attribute their mediocrity or failure to a lack of resources, whether material, interpersonal or luck. But real poverty is the poverty of the mind. People with a rich mind are creative and resourceful, capable of creating something out of nothing or making good use of whatever is available to them wisely to turn adversity into good times. They seem to possess magical powers that turn rot into gold.

Take Li Ruijun (李睿珺), the director and screenwriter of the recent hit film Return to the Dust (隐入尘烟), for example. Li has made eight major films. In each of them, he was the director and screenwriter. At least three of them are set in his home village. Since he has no money to hire professionals, half of the villagers become his actors. His parents are also his actors, playing small roles in some of his films. His maternal grandfather, Ma Chunxing, a typical old farmer, starred in The Old Donkey （老驴头2010) and Fly with the Crane (告訴他們,我乘白鶴去了2012). As a novice in acting, Ma even won the Best Actor in a Leading Role Award at the 2014 Golden Koala Chinese Film Festival. Li Ruijun also won several international awards for the latter film, the Best Exploration Award at the 2013 Beijing Student Film Festival, Best Director at the 2013 Brasilia Film Festival, Best Young Director at the 2014 China Film Director's Guild Awards, and Best Directorial Debut at the 2015 Chunyan Awards. ①

His maternal uncle, Wu Renlin, played roles in two films directed by Li Ruijun. Wu, a dark-skinned native farmer who used his natural and spontaneous acting skills, "killed" many professional actors. Wu refused any payment and only accepted a red packet of 5000 yuan for his performance in the film Return to the Dust. ② Nevertheless, the small-budget film officially crossed the 100 million mark at the box office on September 7.
Li Ruijun's success is living proof of the idea addressed in this essay: True poverty lies in poverty of the mind. That is, enriching our minds is the sure path to greater creativity and prosperity. Instead of complaining about the lack of resources and support, people should make sense of what they already have, discover their uniqueness, and create miracles from it. Whatever happens, the only thing you can always count on is your overall growth, especially growth in your mind.
